Prostate, Kidney and Bladder Scan

A prostate, kidney and bladder scan is a non-invasive medical test that helps physicians diagnose and treat medical conditions.

A prostate scan uses sound waves to produce images of a man’s prostate, it can help diagnose symptoms such as elevated blood test or difficulty urinating.

A kidney ultrasound scan may be used to assess the size, location and shape of the kidneys and related structures such as the ureters and bladders. Ultrasound scans can detect cysts, tumours abscesses, stones, obstructions fluid collection and infections in and around the kidneys.

A bladder scan can be used to help identify bladder distension; it can also identify causes of urinary frequency and bladder irritability.

You may need a prostate; kidney and bladder scan if you notice any of the following symptoms:

Urinary retention

Increased urinary frequency especially at night

Blood in urine and semen

Feeling that your bladder has not emptied fully

 

Preparation for your scan:

Drink 1-2 pints of water an hour before the scan

Wear loose fitting clothing

Maintain routine medication

A full bladder is needed for this examination

The appointment should last around 20 minutes and is available to men from the age of 16 years.

A full report will be compiled for your GP to follow up.
