A private breast ultrasound Armpit/axilla scan is a non-invasive and painless imaging test that uses sound waves to create pictures of the breast tissue. It can help detect abnormalities in the breast, armpits or axilla, cysts, lumps, masses or infections and evaluate the blood flow to the breast area.

At Ultrasound Care, we have both male and female sonographers who can perform a breast ultrasound.

Why you should get a Breast Ultrasound Armpit/Axilla Scan

Book A Breast Ultrasound Armpit/Axilla Scan

This type of scan is often recommended as a complementary test to mammography, especially for younger women with denser breast tissue where mammograms can be less sensitive. It may also be advised when investigating new symptoms such as pain, swelling, or palpable lumps

Because the procedure is quick, painless and requires no preparation, it offers patients reassurance and valuable information about their breast health in a comfortable and safe setting.

Key benefits of a Breast Ultrasound Armpit/Axilla Scan

  • A non-invasive & safe scan: Uses sound waves instead of radiation, making it safe for repeated use, including for younger patients or pregnant women.
  • Detects breast abnormalities: Can identify cysts, solid masses, fibroadenomas, and other breast lesions that may not be visible on a mammogram, especially in dense breast tissue
  • Axillary: Assesses lymph nodes in the axilla for enlargement or abnormal features, which can be important in detecting infections, inflammation, or early signs of cancer spread.
  • Quick & Convenient: Usually painless, requires no special preparation, and results can often be available immediately.

Some of the key reasons for undergoing this scan include:

  • Symptoms such as breast pain, swelling, nipple discharge, skin changes, sunken nipples, changes in shape or size, fluid excretion, skin sores, lumps and bumps, dimples, red or hot areas, nipple crust.
  • Dense breast tissue which reduces the visibility of tumours in mammograms.
  • Breast implant problems make it difficult to detect breast cancer on a mammogram.
  • Personal or family history of breast cancer
  • A need for a second opinion or after a home-self check.

What happens during a Breast Ultrasound Armpit/Axilla Scan

A breast ultrasound with an axilla scan is a safe, non-invasive procedure that uses sound waves to create images of the breast tissue and nearby lymph nodes.

During the scan, the patient lies on an examination table, often with the arm raised to expose the breast and armpit, while a water-based gel is applied to the skin to ensure clear imaging, a handheld transducer is then moved over the breast and armpit areas, capturing real-time images that help detect cysts, solid masses or enlarged lymph nodes.

The procedure is painless, requires no radiation, and usually takes only a few minutes. After the scan, the gel is wiped off and the Sonographer reviews the image to provide a report, with any findings potentially prompting further evaluation or a follow up.

How Good Is Ultrasound At Detecting Breast Cancers?

Breast ultrasound is a highly effective way to investigate any lumps or abnormalities in the breast. Its accuracy in detecting cancer depends on several factors, including breast tissue type, the skill of the sonographer or radiologist performing the scan and how well the images of any lesion, tumour or mass are interpreted.

Ultrasound is particularly useful for people with dense breast tissue, as it can reveal cancers that mammograms may not detect. However, mammography has its own strengths, such as identifying tiny calcium deposits (microcalcifications) that ultrasound can sometimes miss.

Ultrasound can help distinguish between fluid-filled cysts and solid lumps in the breast. It also provides important detail about the characteristics of a solid mass, helping to determine whether it appears benign, indeterminate or suspicious for malignancy.

A Breast Ultrasound Armpit/Axilla Scan at our London clinic is most often used for targeted assessment of a lump that can be felt, or as a complementary test alongside mammography or MRI. It is not usually used as a primary screen method, except in certain cases such as younger women, pregnant women or individuals who cannot undergo mammography.
