Musculoskeletal Scan - Ankle and Foot

    MSK Scan

Pain in the ankle and foot can be difficult to often pinpoint to a specific area, but ultrasound is able to evaluate much as the anatomy with the ankle and foot. An ultrasound scan has the ability to assess the ankle and foot dynamically, revealing abnormalities that may be inadequately visualised on static images.

We offer an ankle and foot ultrasound scan to men and women above the age of 16.

The MSK scan is performed to check the .....

Ankle and foot for a range of conditions. This includes an assessment of the following:

    • Ankle joint
    • Anterior, medial and lateral tendons
    • Achilles tendon and associated soft tissues
    • Small joints of ankle and foot
    • Bursitis (inflammation and/or irritation of the fluid filled sac between the tissue)

Our ultrasounds can also identify common problems such as soft tissue masses, bursitis or capsulitis of the joints, ligament injuries, heel spurs and plantar fasciitis and tarsal tunnel syndrome.

Your ankle and foot ultrasound is carried out by one of our qualified sonographers in a private dedicated scanning room.

    • Post injury pain or inflammation of joint
    • Inflammation of tendons
    • Arthritis
    • Bursitis (inflammation and/or irritation of the fluid filled sac between the tissue)
    • Swelling of the joint, causing an increase of fluid that surrounds the joint
    • Ligament tears
    • Neuromas (the thickening of tissue around the nerve between bases of the toes. This can cause pain or numbness over the ball of the foot)
    • Plantar fibroma (benign growth in the arch of the foot)
    • Plantar fasciitis (thickening of the band of tissue running underneath the sole of the foot)

If you are having an ankle and foot ultrasound scan there is no specific clothing which you should wear. However footwear and socks will need to be removed in order to expose the feet for the assessment.

The opposite side may need to be assessed for comparison.
