What Is A Stomach Scan?

A stomach scan is an abdominal ultrasound that utilises high frequency sound waves to create detailed images of the internal organs and structures. It is a non-invasive, painless, radiation free imaging technique that gives clear insight into the cause of pain or discomfort in various bodily regions. Ultrasound scans are one of the safest scanning methods in the medical field.

Despite its name, a stomach scan actually covers the wider abdominal region, examining several abdominal organs and structures, such as:

  • Stomach
  • Gallbladder
  • Liver
  • Kidneys
  • Spleen
  • Appendix
  • Pancreas
  • Abdominal blood vessels.

At Ultrasound Care, we provide a stomach scan, otherwise known as a General Abdominal Scan, for both men and women aged 16 and above. This is typically a 30 minute appointment that gives our qualified sonographers opportunity to scan your abdominal region and provide you with a detailed report to discuss further with your GP.

If you have been struggling with stomach discomfort or pain, book your stomach scan with your local Ultrasound Care clinic today. Available across Birmingham, Bromsgrove and London.

Why You Might Need A Stomach Scan

You can be referred for a stomach scan from your GP if you have been struggling with stomach or abdominal pains for some time; you can also seek a private stomach scan without a referral at Ultrasound Care clinics. • Ongoing stomach pain
  • Swelling or bloating
  • Digestive or indigestion discomfort
  • Unexplained nausea or omitting
  • Liver concerns or abnormal blood tests
  • Suspected gallstones
  • Pain in the kidneys, or suspected kidney stones
  • Checking for lumps or abnormalities in the abdominal region
  • Monitoring existing abdominal conditions.

If you have been struggling with persistent or gradually worsening symptoms and want a quick understanding of why, book your stomach scan with your local Ultrasound Care clinic today. Seeking quick results and further discussion with your GP can help prevent further complications or worsening conditions.

What A Typical Stomach Scan Appointment Looks Like

A typical stomach scan appointment is approximately 30 minutes. This includes speaking with our sonographer to understand your symptoms, having your stomach scan, and leaving with a detailed report that details any concerns in order for you to discuss further with your GP.

During your scan, you will be asked to lie back on the bed and lift up clothing covering the abdomen region. Our experienced sonographers will put a gel on your abdomen and use a wand like device to get images of your internal abdomen structures and organs. The transducer should not be painful for you, but you may experience slight discomfort. Please inform the sonographer if you are uncomfortable at any time.

Once the scan is complete, your detailed report will be compiled to discuss further with your GP.
