Women’s Fertility Scan

A pelvic scan is often the first step in investigating the uterus, ovaries, and surrounding structures when assessing reproductive health. It helps determine whether there may be an underlying gynaecological issue that could reduce your chances of conceiving naturally or affect the course of your fertility treatment.

A Fertility scan is therefore a key initial test for women who may be struggling to conceive. It confirms the presence and structure of the uterus and both ovaries, while also checking for abnormalities that might interfere with fertility.

Possible signs of infertility in women may include:

  • Chronic pelvic pain (not limited to menstruation)
  • Pain or discomfort during sex
  • Persistent back pain
  • Fatigue and low energy
  • Hormonal Imbalance & Nausea
  • Irregular or missed periods, spotting between cycles
  • Bowel problems or pain with bowel movements

The Purpose Of A Fertility Scan

What happens during a fertility scan?

Ultrasound scanning is the primary method used to assess the female reproductive system, and it can be performed in two different ways depending on the level of detail required. An abdominal ultrasound involves applying a layer of gel to the lower abdomen and moving a handheld probe across the skin.

The gel helps improve contact and ensures the sound waves produce clearer images. In some cases, a transvaginal ultrasound may be recommended, where a slender, specially designed probe is gently inserted into the vagina.

This approach provides a closer and more detailed view of the uterus, endometrium, and ovaries, making it particularly useful for fertility assessments. Both techniques use high frequency sound waves to generate real time images of the pelvic organs. The procedure is generally quick and not considered painful, though some women may experience mild discomfort or pressure during the scan, especially with the internal method.

What can a fertility scan show?

  • Size, position, and shape of the uterus
  • Condition of the endometrial lining
  • Health and function of the ovaries
  • Presence of cysts, fibroids, or polyps
  • Follicle tracking (to monitor egg development)
  • Endometrial thickness (important for embryo implantation)
  • Approximate ovulation timing

 Preparing for your scan

  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing.
  • For an abdominal scan, a full bladder is required. You may be asked to drink 3-4 pints of water about one hour beforehand. A full bladder helps move the intestines out of the way, giving a clearer view of the reproductive organs.

After the scan

The procedure usually takes no more than 20-30 minutes. A detailed report will be prepared and given to you, so you can bring this to your GP, who will discuss the findings with you and plan next steps if required.

Women who may benefit from a fertility scan include:

Those having trouble conceiving, if you’ve been trying to get pregnant for 12 months or more (or 6 months if you’re over 35), a fertility scan is often recommended as part of the first-line investigations.

Women with irregular or absent periods
Scans can help identify whether the ovaries are producing eggs regularly and whether the uterine lining is developing properly.

Women with known or suspected gynaecological conditions. Such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), fibroids, endometriosis, ovarian cysts, or uterine abnormalities.

Women with symptoms that may affect fertility

  • Chronic pelvic pain
  • Pain during sex
  • Severe period pain or heavy bleeding
  • Unexplained spotting between periods
  • Recurrent miscarriage
  • Women preparing for fertility treatment
A scan is usually carried out before treatments such as IVF, IUI, or ovulation induction to ensure the uterus and ovaries are in good condition.
  • Anyone wanting reassurance about reproductive health.Even if you’re not currently trying for a baby, a scan can provide peace of mind if you have symptoms, a family history of reproductive issues, or just want to understand your fertility health better.

In summary, a pelvic or fertility scan is a safe, straightforward, and highly valuable investigation for women experiencing difficulties conceiving or those with symptoms that may point to underlying gynaecological issues.

It provides detailed information about the uterus, ovaries, and endometrial lining, helping to identify any problems early and guide the most appropriate treatment pathway.

Whether you are just beginning your fertility journey, preparing for treatment, or seeking reassurance about your reproductive health, this simple procedure offers vital insights and an important first step towards achieving your goals.
