A General Abdominal Ultrasound Scan, sometimes referred to as a stomach scan, is a non-invasive ultrasound scan that produces detailed images of your abdominal organs and internal structures for examination. The use of high-frequency sound waves creates a real time image of the inside of your abdomen, allowing our qualified sonographers to assess your health and the function of your abdominal organs.

At Ultrasound Care, we aim to ensure that you get answers about your health & well-being quickly. If you have been struggling with abdominal pain or discomfort, book a general abdominal ultrasound scan with your local clinic today. If you would like a same day appointment, call our team!

The Purpose of A General Abdominal Ultrasound Scan

The abdomen is home to a number of major organs including:

  • Kidneys
  • Liver
  • Pancreas
  • Spleen
  • Gallbladder
  • Bladder
  • Major blood vessels such as the aorta.

A general abdominal ultrasound scan is vital for identifying any concerns in the abdominal organs or internal structures. They can identify:

  • Abdominal pain
  • Abdominal aortic aneurysm
  • Gallstones
  • Kidney stones
  • Liver disease (fatty liver, cirrhosis)
  • Abdominal fluid in the abdomen
  • Tumours or cysts
  • Cancer
  • Pyloric Stenosis
  • Infections or inflammation.

If you have been experiencing pain or discomfort in your abdomen, book a general abdominal ultrasound scan with your local Ultrasound Care clinic today.

Who Would Benefit From a General Abdominal Ultrasound Scan?

Pain in your abdomen can be uncomfortable. If you have been to your local GP, a doctor may recommend a general abdominal ultrasound scan for a number of reasons, including:

  • If you have been suffering from abdominal pain or swelling.
  • If you have unexplained weight loss.
  • Your skin and eyes show signs of jaundice.
  • You have blood in your urine.
  • There are unusual results in a recent blood test.

General Abdominal Ultrasound Scan Procedure

In order to prepare for your scan, there are a number of recommendations that we ask you to comply with.

  • Do not eat anything 6-8 hours before your scan.
  • Drink only clear fluids beforehand (e.g. water).
  • Maintain regular medication.
  • Remove any abdominal piercings beforehand.
  • Wear clothing that provides ease of access to your abdomen.

During your scan we will ask you to lie on your back on our examination table. A gel substance will then be applied to your abdomen. This helps the sound waves to pass through the abdomen more effectively, removing small pockets of air that could interfere with the ultrasound imaging.

When the gel has been applied to the abdomen, a transducer (a wand like device) is used moved over your abdomen in order to create clear images of your abdominal region.

Note: The transducer may press lightly on your abdomen, but it should not be an uncomfortable procedure. If at any point you feel uncomfortable, please let your sonographer know.

The overall procedure should take approximately 30-45 minutes. Upon completion, a detailed report will be compiled and given to you. This can be further discussed with your GP.
