Post Menopause Scan

30 minute appointment
This scan is available to women when menstruation has stopped for 12 months or more.
The Post-Menopause Scan is a specialised pelvic ultrasound designed for women who have gone through menopause. It assesses the size, shape, and condition of the uterus, ovaries, and the lining of the womb (endometrium). This scan can detect issues such as ovarian cysts, pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), or thickening of the womb lining, and it also plays an important role in monitoring the effects of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) and screening for signs of gynaecological cancers.
For women in the post-menopausal stage of life, this scan provides early detection, reassurance, and valuable information to support long-term health and wellbeing
The Purpose of A Post-Menopause Ultrasound Scan
Why should women have a post-menopause scan?
After menopause, the body undergoes significant hormonal changes, which can affect the reproductive organs. While the ovaries stop producing eggs, and menstrual cycles cease, it is still possible for gynaecological problems to develop.
Because some of these conditions may not cause obvious symptoms until they are more advanced, regular monitoring through ultrasound is an important part of post-menopausal healthcare.
You may benefit from this scan if you:
- Have a family history of ovarian or uterine cancer
- Are experiencing irregular bleeding or spotting after menopause (which should always be investigated)
- Suffer from abdominal bloating, pelvic pain, or unexplained discomfort
- Are on hormone replacement therapy (HRT) and need monitoring of its effects on the womb lining
- Want reassurance and a general check-up of your pelvic organs in the post-menopausal stage
Benefits of having a post-menopause scan
- Cancer screening – Detects abnormalities such as endometrial thickening, ovarian cysts, or suspicious growths that may require further testing.
- Monitoring HRT effects – Ensures the womb lining remains healthy and that HRT is not causing unwanted changes.
- Peace of mind – Offers reassurance for women who are concerned about new symptoms or who want to be proactive about their health.
- Detection of common conditions – Identifies ovarian cysts, fibroids, or signs of pelvic inflammatory disease that may otherwise go unnoticed.
- Non-invasive and safe – Ultrasound uses sound waves, not radiation, making it safe for regular use at any stage of life.
What happens during the procedure?
The scan is performed using ultrasound imaging, which uses high-frequency sound waves to create detailed pictures of the pelvic organs. There are two approaches:
- Abdominal ultrasound – A water-based gel is applied to the lower abdomen, and a handheld probe (transducer) is moved across the skin to obtain images of the uterus and ovaries. A full bladder is required for this part of the scan, as it helps push the bowel aside, giving clearer views of the pelvic organs.
- Transvaginal ultrasound (internal scan) – With your consent, a slender, specialised probe is gently inserted into the vagina. This provides a closer and more detailed look at the womb lining, uterus, and ovaries. This is particularly useful for assessing post-menopausal bleeding or monitoring the effects of HRT. While some women may feel slight discomfort, the procedure is generally quick and well-tolerated.
The scan usually takes 20-30 minutes and may involve both abdominal and transvaginal approaches to give the most accurate results.
