What Is Appendicitis?
Appendicitis occurs when the appendix is inflamed or infected. It can develop quickly and can become serious if left untreated. As symptoms often worsen within hours, seeking an early appendicitis diagnosis is important to avoid further complications such as a spreading infection or a rupture.
An appendicitis ultrasound scan can help with early diagnosis, meaning you get the treatment you need quickly. Book with your local Ultrasound Care clinic today.
What Is An Appendicitis Ultrasound?
An appendicitis ultrasound, otherwise known as an abdominal scan, is a non-invasive scan that uses sound waves to create detailed imaging of your appendix and surrounding abdominal organs and structures. If you are struggling with a suspected appendicitis, seeking an ultrasound is often the first step to identifying it. This is due to ultrasound being:
- Free from radiation
- Safe for everyone
- Quick and painless
- Highly effective at detecting inflammation
During an appendicitis ultrasound scan, a transducer probe will be moved across the abdominal region to assess for inflammation, swelling or infection around the appendix and surrounding structures.
If you are looking for quick, accurate answers for your pain, Ultrasound Care can provide same day scan appointments (where possible) or get you in as quickly as possible for a time that suits you. Don’t struggle, get answers with your local clinic; book an appendicitis ultrasound online today.
When We Recommend An Appendicitis Ultrasound Scan
If you have been to see your GP for discomfort or pain in your lower abdomen, you may be referred for or advised to get an appendicitis ultrasound. You can also seek a private abdominal scan if you have been struggling with:
- Sharp pain in your lower right abdomen that has worsened
- Pain that has started at the belly button but moved downwards
- Fever, nausea or vomiting
- Loss of appetite
- Bloating or tenderness of the abdomen
- Difficulties walking or standing upright due to pain
If you experience these symptoms suddenly or they rapidly intensify, it is important to seek a medical assessment quickly.
At Ultrasound Care, we can provide you with quick appointments and same day results giving you the information needed to seek further treatment if required.
What Does An Appendicitis Ultrasound Check For?
When seeking a professional appendicitis ultrasound scan, this should check for the following:
- Inflammation signs
- Swollen or enlarged appendix
- Thickened appendix walls
- Increased blood flow
- Infection indicators
- Fluid collection
- Abscess formation
- Surrounding tissue changes
Other possible causes of pain or discomfort can include gynaecological issues, kidney stones, hernias, bowel conditions or enlarged lymph nodes.
Seeking an ultrasound scan can assess the cause of your pain and give you further indication on whether further treatment is required from your GP or urgent healthcare professionals.

The Benefits of Early Detection
If you have appendix related concerns, these can escalate quickly. If left untreated, this can result in more serious complications, including potential to rupture.
By choosing to book a private appendicitis ultrasound, you can seek peace of mind or the need for additional treatment when it matters most. At Ultrasound Care, our abdominal scan aims to rule out any appendix concerns or prevent unnecessary delays in seeking treatment. This reduces your risk of complications and speeds up treatment that may be required.
Our Ultrasound Care clinics are able to offer appointments quickly, with some same day appointment slots being available. For a same day appointment, speak to your local clinic and book the right appointment for you.
What Happens During Your Abdominal Scan
Our abdominal scans are typically 30 minute appointments which includes:
- A discussion with our qualified sonographer to discuss your symptoms
- Following this, a gel will be applied to your abdomen. Our sonographer will then use a transducer to capture images of your abdominal region.
- Once the scan in complete, you will receive a detailed report, including images, to discuss further with your GP.
An appendicitis ultrasound should not be painful; however, you may experience discomfort as the transducer applies light pressure to obtain clear images. If this is uncomfortable, alert your sonographer straight away. These ultrasound scans are non-invasive and safe for everyone.
In order to prepare for your abdominal scan, we ask that you:
- Do not eat 6-8 hours beforehand
- Drink only clear liquids before your scan
- Wear comfortable clothing that give easy access to your abdomen
- Remove any piercings beforehand.
If you take regular medication, please take this as normal.
If you have any questions regarding our abdominal scans, please contact your local clinic before booking and we can answer your queries as clearly as possible.
Don’t struggle with pain or let things worsen, book your appendix scan with your local Ultrasound Care clinic today.
