What are Cortisone/Steroid Injections?

Cortisone injections consist of corticosteroid medication and a local anaesthetic combined to offer fast and long-term relief of pain, inflammation and stiffness. For patients who want to return to daily activities and achieve more fluent movement in a smaller space of time, cortisone/steroid injections are the recommended route.

All of our injections are performed under ultrasound guidance to ensure absolute precision and effectiveness of the treatment itself.

Conditions Cortisone Injections Can Treat

Ultrasound-guided cortisone injections are used across a range of different musculoskeletal conditions found in joints around the body.  Some of these include:

  • Shoulder pain (including bursitis, rotator cuff disease, rotator cuff tears/injury)
  • Tennis elbow and golfer’s elbow
  • Hip pain (including trochanteric bursitis)
  • Knee pain and arthritis
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Joint & Soft Tissues

If you are unsure if what you're suffering with comes under our cortisone injections for standard conditions or advanced procedures, contact our team at our Ultrasound-Care Bromsgrove clinic. We can help assess and advise on what the best treatment is for you.

What To Expect During Your Appointment

Our cortisone injections are administered by experienced clinicians, and thanks to our ultrasound guidance, we're able to visualise the target area to guarantee a safe and precise treatment. When you enquire with Ultrasound-care for a cortisone injection, you will go through the following steps:

Gloved hand using a handheld ultrasound probe on a patient's inner upper arm/underarm area.

Step 1: Clinical Assessment and Ultrasound Scan

We perform an ultrasound scan to fully assess the area and ensure that the cortisone injection is suitable for you.

Step 2: Discussion of Treatment Options

After the scan, we can discuss the benefits, risks and any alternatives if the cortisone isn't suitable.

Paramedics in gloves attend to a patient, placing hands on the injured arm inside a vehicle or ambulance.

Step 3: Ultrasound-guided Cortisone Injection

Once the scan results are in and you're made aware of the details surrounding the injection, it's ready to be administered. The procedure usually takes 5 to 10 minutes.

Step 4: Aftercare Advice

Once the injection is complete, we make sure you're feeling okay and advise you on the recovery process. We can recommend any changes you might need to make to your everyday activities. Most patients are then able to return home immediately after the procedure is done. Patients are advised not to drive 24hrs after the procedure.

We employ precautions to minimise any risks and will always discuss them before continuing with the procedure.

If you have any questions or want to know more about the details of the procedure, please contact your nearest clinic, and a member of the team can talk you through these.

Cortisone/Steroid Injections: Additional Information

How long do Cortisone/Steroid injections last?

The pain relief from these injections can range from several weeks to months. The injection provides reduced pain for enough time to allow for additional rehabilitation and physiotherapy.

The response time can vary depending on the condition that's being treated, the severity of inflammation and what rehabilitation is carried out after the procedure.

When are Steroid injections not recommended?

There are certain scenarios where we won't recommend the cortisone/steroid injections to treat your condition. This could be due to uncontrolled medical conditions or the pain is not inflammatory-based.

Please note: if you have prosthetic joints, an active infection or taking antibiotics or have an allergy to steroids, then these injections are not suitable.

If you have also had past injections that have failed, then we will advise an alternative treatment route for you.
