This scan is available to men from the age of 16 years.

A men’s scrotal / testicular scan is an ultrasound scan designed to assess the health of testes, epididymis and the surrounding structures of the scrotum. It is a non-invasive and safe imaging method that can provide our sonographers with clear, real time images in order to assess and diagnose any identified conditions. Conditions identified can range from common concerns to more serious issues that need additional treatment.

The Purpose of Scrotal / Testicular Scans

A scrotal / testicular scan may be recommended in order to check the condition and function of the male testicles and scrotum. Two testicles produce sperm and the male sec hormone, testosterone. They are a primary male organ that should be checked regularly for any concerns.

The main purpose of this testicular scan is to accurately evaluate the internal structures of the scrotum in order to diagnose and monitor potential conditions. This ultrasound scan can:

  • Detect and characterise masses: Identifying and determining whether a lump is a solid mass (such as a tumour) or a benign cyst (such as a spermatocele). This is vital for receiving additional treatment from your GP.
  • Assess blood flow: An ultrasound can visualise blood flow within the testicles and surrounding tissue, helping to diagnose conditions such as testicular torsion.
  • Identify any inflammation: Any signs of swelling or increased blood flow can be identified, helping to diagnose conditions such as epididymitis or orchitis.
  • Visualise varicoceles: Identify and assess the size of varicoceles which are often a cause of testicular pain. This can also contribute towards male infertility.
  • Assess trauma: Determining the extent of injury to the testicles and surrounding structures.

If you have been struggling with uncomfortable feelings or pain from your scrotum, it is important to get this reviewed. Whether recommended by your GP, or for your own peace of mind, at Ultrasound Care, we aim to give you reassurance regarding your health as quickly as possible. Our Scrotal / Testicular Scan Procedure

There is no specific form of preparation for this scan, it is a straightforward procedure. You will be asked to remove your lower clothing before you lie back for the ultrasound.

Once you are comfortable, a gel will be applied to the scrotum. This helps to give clear imaging throughout the ultrasound. Our sonographer will examine the scrotum, testicles and surrounding structures, checking the blood flow in the scrotal area and identifying any areas for concern.

Note: This scan should not be painful. If at any point you feel uncomfortable, please let your sonographer know straight away.

Our scrotal / testicular scans are approximately 15-30 minutes in length and require no recovery time post scan. Following your scan, a detailed report will be given to you in order to discuss further with your GP.
