20 minute appointment

This scan is available to women from the age of 16 years.

An aortic surveillance scan is an ultrasound scan that assesses your aorta, the body’s largest artery. Crucial for supplying oxygenated blood to the rest of the body, this is a vital blood vessel in the abdominal region.

An aortic ultrasound scan is non-invasive and painless. It is key for monitoring your aorta’s health, particularly if there is a risk of aortic aneurysm. Key for detecting and tracking this condition, it can be important if you have a family history of this condition.

At Ultrasound Care, our aim is to give you reassurance about your health as quickly as possible. If you are concerned about your aortic health, book a private aortic surveillance scan at your local clinic today. If you would like a same day appointment, speak to our team.

What is the Purpose of An Aortic Surveillance Scan?

Aortic scans are primarily performed to identify and monitor Aortic Aneurysms. An aneurysm is when you experience the bulging or ballooning of a blood vessel which has been caused by the weakening of the vessel wall. In the aorta, this can lead to serious severe internal bleeding or life-threatening conditions if ruptured. If you are at higher risk of aortic aneurysms, it is key to monitor the condition to mitigate such medical concerns.

At Ultrasound Care, our aortic surveillance scan allows us to:

  • Detect aneurysms: An ultrasound scan can help identify the presence of an aortic aneurysm before you begin to experience symptoms.
  • Measure their size and monitor growth: Accurately measure existing aneurysms and track growth over time. This is key as the risk of rupture increases with the size of the aneurysm.
  • Assess risk: Having regular private aortic surveillance scans can help give essential information to your GP, helping them to provide you with the best course of action and manage your risk level.
  • Rule out aneurysms: For those who have a family history of aortic aneurysms, this scan can give you peace of mind that you are aneurysm free.

If you are at higher risk of this condition, speak to our team today to book your private aortic surveillance scan today with your local Ultrasound Care clinic.

Who Should Book an Aortic Surveillance Scan

If you have a family history of aortic aneurysms and are therefore at a higher risk, or have been diagnosed with this yourself, this ultrasound scan is ideal for you. Designed to provide regular monitoring of aortic aneurysms, this ultrasound scan can provide you with regular health updates and reassurances. You should consider booking this scan if you:

  • Have a family history of aortic aneurysms
  • Have been diagnosed yourself with this condition
  • Have a history of smoking
  • Have other risk factors for vascular disease such as high cholesterol or high blood pressure
  • Have been experiencing unusual abdominal or back pain and have seen your Gp for advice beforehand.

If you have been told previously by your GP that you are at higher risk of this condition, it does not matter if you have experienced symptoms, you can still book an aortic surveillance scan for early detection or management.

Find your local Ultrasound Care clinic today and book your appointment. Same day appointments may be available; call our clinic teams for more information.

The Procedure for An Aortic Surveillance Scan

To prepare for your aortic surveillance scan, we recommend the following:

  • Drink only clear fluids before your appointment.
  • Do not eat 6-8 hours beforehand.
  • Remove abdominal piercings.
  • Wear clothes that allow access to your abdomen.
  • Maintain regular medications.

During the scan appointment, you will be asked to lie on your back and lift up clothing so that the abdomen can be scanned. A gel will be applied to your abdominal region, helping the sound waves pass through the abdomen more effectively. A transducer (a wand like device) will then move over your abdominal region, creating clear ultrasound images that can show any signs of aortic aneurysms.

Note: The transducer may press lightly on your abdomen slightly, but this should not cause pain. If you feel uncomfortable at any point, please let your sonographer know.

An aortic surveillance scan appointment takes approximately 20 minutes. Following this, your sonographer will give you a detailed report to further discuss with your GP.

Ultrasound Care provides aortic surveillance scans across all three clinics in Birmingham, Bromsgrove and London. If you require further information or need help with booking your appointment, speak to your local clinic team today.
