Our Kidney, Ureter & Bladder Scan Procedure

To best prepare for your kidney, ureter & bladder scan, we recommend the following:

  • Drinking clear fluids an hour before your scan (approx. 1-2 pints)
  • Maintain regular medications
  • Wear clothes that give easy access to the kidney region
  • A full bladder is required for this scan

You will be asked to lie on your back and move clothing in order to give access to the kidney region. A gel will be applied to the kidney region, allowing a clear ultrasound imaging result.

A sonographer will then use a transducer (a wand like device) to move over the kidney region, gaining clear ultrasound images of the kidneys, bladder and ureters.

Note: This scan should not be painful. If at any point you feel uncomfortable, please let your sonographer know straight away.

A kidney, ureter & bladder scan appointment should take approximately 20 minutes, with a detailed report being given to you post-scan to discuss further with your GP.
